SUMMARY:Virtual Tour of the Smithsonian Gardens' Orchid Collection
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Justin Kondrat\, Horticulturist\, Smithsonian Gardens \nSince it was established in 1974\, the Smithsonian Gardens Orchid Collection (SGOC) started with a bequest from Marjorie Merriweather Post\, and in conjunction with support from Mary Livingston Ripley\, this collection became well-established and has grown to over 4\,000 specimens from all over the world. Collections like SGOC are a vital conservation resource offering protection to species from a variety of threats including habitat change and over collecting. SGOC is maintained within the Smithsonian Gardens Greenhouse Facility in Suitland\, Maryland by staff\, interns\, contractors and volunteers. This virtual tour\, led by Justin Kondrat\, SGOC Lead Horticulturist\, will give you a rare look into how large-scale collections are managed and persevered for generations of inspiration. \nRegistration is free; click here to register.

He will discuss light\, temperature\, watering\, humidity\, fertilization\, and pest management to ensure your orchids thrive through winter. \nSpeaker’s Biography: Dr. Douglas Needham is retired Vice President\, Education\, Longwood Gardens\, and former Professor of Floriculture\, Oklahoma State University. He earned his B.S. in Biological Sciences and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Horticultural Plant Breeding and Genetics from Purdue University. He was recognized as Distinguished Agriculture Alumnus by Purdue in 2017\, and he was awarded the Veitch Memorial Medal by The Royal Horticultural Society in 2018. He has enjoyed growing flowering plants since he was a child\, and that passion continues throughout retirement. He grows hundreds of orchids in cool and warm glasshouses\, he designs and cultivates English-inspired perennial borders\, and he is restoring a native prairie. Dr. Needham enjoys sharing his passion for growing plants with others through workshops\, presentations\, tours\, and consulting. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:The presentation at the 1:00 Greengrowers meeting will be “Important Lessons I Learned as a Beginner” by Keith Warren.  Keith grows orchids in a solarium attached to his home and has been a dedicated member of OOS since joining at the February 2013 meeting. \nThe 2:00 presentation will be by Eric Sauer on “The Genus Maxillaria”.    Eric is the proprietor of River Valley Orchids in Centerville\, Ohio.  He has been growing orchids for over 30 years and specializes in South American Species.   He has received over 85 awards from the American Orchid Society and has three orchids named after him including two species from Ecuador.  Eric regularly works with other Maxillaria aficionados around the world to better understand the genus.  His  real job is as a registered landscape architect and is the planning manager for Five Rivers MetroParks in Dayton\, Ohio. \n

DESCRIPTION:Speaker:  Dotty Woodson – “Growing and Blooming Phalaenopsis for Many Years” \nDotty Woodson\, Ph. D.\, is an Orchid Grower\, Writer\, Photographer and Lecturer.  She has B. S. and M.S. degrees in Horticulture from Tarleton State University and a doctoral degree from Texas A&M and Texas Tech Universities.  Dr. Woodson is the owner\, along with her husband Berry\, of D&B Orchids in Fort Worth.  Dotty has grown orchids since 1973.  Her goal is to share her knowledge and enjoyment about growing orchids.  She has presented orchid programs to orchid growers and gardeners in many states\, at four International Master Gardener Conference\, two International Phalaenopsis Alliance Conferences\, California Speakers Day\, Texas\, New England and New York Speakers Circuits and to international audiences on Norwegian and Holland America Cruise Lines.  Woodson is a member of the Fort Worth Orchid Society\, Greater North Texas Orchid Society\, Southwest Regional Orchid Growers Association and the American Orchid Society.  She has also written articles about orchid culture for many newspapers and magazines and appeared on many television and radio shows to discuss growing orchids.  In addition\, Dotty has produced several orchid videos and contributed orchid material and photographs for several books.  Her DVD “Growing Orchids Made Easy with Dotty” is available through the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Bookstore\,  Before retirement\, Dotty taught landscape water conservation by design\, plant selection and irrigation efficiency for 32 years at Tarrant County College\, TCU\, UTA\, and for Texas A&M Extension as a County Extension Agent in Tarrant County and Water Resource Extension State Specialist.  For 21 years\, she wrote a weekly horticulture column for the Fort Worth Star Telegram.  Dotty has appeared weekly on NBC News and other television programs for 25 years.
