DESCRIPTION:OOS Member Dr. Mike Friday will present “Basic Orchid Care for the Beginning Grower” at 1–3pm in Meeting Room #1  of Will Rogers Gardens Exhibition Center\, 3400 NW 36th Street\, Oklahoma City. Dr. Friday will cover basic orchid care\, including watering\, fertilizing\, and repotting\, for some of the more commonly grown orchid genera. DESCRIPTION:OOS members and the public are invited to design a postcard for the May Show & Sale. All design must be the submitter’s own\, original work. Design must be sized for standard A6 postcard\, 5.83″ × 4.13″ (148 mm × 105 mm)\, portrait or landscape. The following information must be included on the postcard. \n\n“Orchid Kicks on Route 66”\n2023 Oklahoma Orchid Society Show & Sale\nSaturday & Sunday\, May 6 & 7\, 10am–4pm\nWill Rogers Gardens Exhibition Center\, 3400 NW 36th Street\, Oklahoma City\, OK\nFree Admission & Free Parking\nInformation: okOrchidSociety.org\nMember of Oklahoma Garden Clubs\, Inc.\n\nSubmit a PDF of your postcard to Show Co-Chair Jana Butcher by 7pm October 7\, 2022. More than one design may be submitted per person. \nOOS membership will vote on postcard designs\, and the winning design will be announced at October’s OOS meeting. SUMMARY:OOS October 2022 Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The meeting begins at 1pm with Grower Tips\, where OOS members address a specific orchid growing challenge\, e.g. a specific pest\, repotting\, mounting\, humidity\, or fertilization\, and answer questions from the audience. Come with questions\, and they’ll provide answers! The Business Meeting will follow at 1:20–1:50pm; Program Presentation at 2–3pm; and Show Table\, Auction\, and Raffle at 3–3:30pm. Follow CDC guidelines with respect to COVID-19 precautions. \nProgram Presentation\n“Winterizing Your Orchid Collection” by OOS President\, Dr. Douglas Needham \nDoug will discuss light\, temperature\, watering\, humidity\, fertilization\, and pest management to ensure your orchids thrive through winter. \nSpeaker’s Biography\nDr. Douglas Needham is retired Vice President\, Education\, Longwood Gardens\, and former Professor of Floriculture\, Oklahoma State University. He earned his B.S. in Biological Sciences and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Horticultural Plant Breeding and Genetics from Purdue University. He was recognized as Distinguished Agriculture Alumnus by Purdue in 2017\, and he was awarded the Veitch Memorial Medal by The Royal Horticultural Society in 2018. He has enjoyed growing flowering plants since he was a child\, and that passion continues throughout retirement. He grows hundreds of orchids in cool and warm glasshouses\, he designs and cultivates English-inspired perennial borders\, and he is restoring a native prairie. Dr. Needham enjoys sharing his passion for growing plants with others through workshops\, presentations\, tours\, and consulting.
