Phal. schilleriana var. purpurea
The genus Phalaenopsis (fail-eh-NOP-sis), abbreviated Phal., which was first formally described in 1825 by Carl Ludwig Blume, is commonly known as moth orchid. The genus name is derived from the Ancient Greek word phalaina (φαλαινα), meaning “a kind of moth” with the suffix -opsis, meaning “having the appearance of.” The genus contains about seventy species, of which Phal. schilleriana is one of the few that is fragrant.
