OOS members love to bring their beautiful orchids to the monthly meeting’s “show table” and share with others their cultural techniques for growing such specimens. OOS Meetings provide the perfect opportunity to do that!

Phalaenopsis spike initiation

OOS member Gabriel enjoys growing Phalaenopsis orchids in his home, as they adapt well to indoor temperature, humidity, and light levels. In this video, he tells how he gets his Phalaenopsis orchids to initiate flower spikes in his home’s window garden.

What is this beautiful plant?

OOS member John discovered a beautifully flowered plant. In this video, he tells what he learned and how he got hooked on growing orchids in his office.

Dracula hirtzii

OOS member Douglas enjoys growing Dracula species in his cool, humid glasshouse, as many are native to the cloud forests of the Andes. He finds the pendulous flowers fascinating. Can you see why the genus is commonly known as the monkey-faced orchids? One species, in particular, is named for this — Dracula simia — referencing Simia, the Linnaean genus of primates, which originally included the apes and monkeys.
