OOS members love to bring their beautiful orchids to the monthly meeting’s “show table” and share with others their cultural techniques for growing such specimens. OOS Meetings provide the perfect opportunity to do that!

“…they both seem to grow well in our heat.  Mine don’t seem to need any extra care, easy to grow here.”

Masdevallia Bella Donna ‘Highland Blush’ HCC/AOS

OOS member Douglas showed Masdevallia Bella Donna ‘Highland Blush’ HCC/AOS, which he purchased on eBay from Orchids for the People last November. He had seen Masd. Bella Donna exhibited at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2017, and he had been searching for one ever since! Although his plant is young, it has five flower spikes, one of which is in bloom, and three new leaves emerging. The flower measures nearly 5½“ from tip to tip! Douglas grows the plant in his cool glasshouse (45°F nights and 65°F days), and waters it about every third day with RO water and fertilizer at 100ppm N.

Lycaste Sunray

OOS member Douglas showed Lycaste Sunray, which he purchased from Cal-Orchid in April 2018. The plant has eight inflorescences, each topped with an elegant, pure white flower that is nearly 6“ in diameter! Douglas grows the plant in his cool glasshouse (45°F nights and 65°F days). Lycaste prefers drier winter months November–February, so Douglas waters his with RO water twice a month during that time and, then, gradually increases watering frequency and fertilization as new pseudobulbs are produced.
