1. Green Growers presentation: Dr Mike Friday was introduced by Carolyn McCabe. His presentation and demonstration was on “How to Make Your Own Orchid Baskets”. Examples of baskets or containers used were large plastic drink bottles and plastic chicken wire with zip ties. His presentation was very timely as most of us are repotting at this time.
  2. Meeting called to order: Jana Butcher called the meeting to order at 2:00pm
  3. Introduction of guests: No new guests or members today. Zoom members were Claire Garrett, Vicki Hallock, and Ken Cunningham.
  4. Approval of minutes of previous meeting: Minutes were approved with the recommendations of Doug Needham.
  5. Treasurer’s report Allen Koch reported that assets and funds as of July 31,2021 are $23,228.40
  6. Old business: A. We need two members to help Johnita Turner as the chair of the nomination committee for next years officers. B. T-shirt and shirt orders with payments are due September 1st, 2021. C. Photos of members will be done today and at the next meeting September 19th, 2021. All members need new photos as well as new members. D. Doug Needham discussed the membership log-in: go to membership in the navigation menu and select “log in.” Enter your email address and click “lost password?” at the bottom of the webpage. A link will be emailed to you to reset your password to one of your choice. He also asked members to give the Website Committee ideas or suggestions for future members-only content.

    6. Show Chairperson/ Upcoming Show and Sale: A. Jana Butcher is selling Orchid Show reception tickets $15.00 each person. Please purchase before the show weekend. B. The plants brought by members for the OOS exhibit are due by Friday October 1st at noon with entry tag filled out, cleaned and ready to place in the exhibit. They can also be brought Thursday evening. C. At next months’ meeting, Carolyn McCabe will do lecture on how to do show exhibits, tags and hand out tag forms for use on plants. Exhibitor forms are on the website. D. Doug Needham announced that two volunteers are still needed for the show — one is for vendor sales assistance for Paph Paradise during his lecture and the other is helping in hospitality area on Sunday pm October 3rd. He also announced that August 28th, 2021, Oklahoma Gardening on OETA will present a segment on repotting of orchids with Doug Needham as the presenter. It will air again on Sunday August 29th and then be on YouTube. OOS’s Show & Sale will be advertised on Oklahoma Gardening, beginning that weekend. The Show & Sale announcement is posted on numerous social media, gardening calendars of events, The Oklahoman, and other news outlets.
    7. Other Reports/announcements: A. Jana Butcher asked members to bring unwanted copies of orchid magazines to the next OOS meeting or on Thursday or Friday the week of the orchid show to hand out to the public at the show. B. Dr Dossey of the Invertebrate Studies Institute sent an email looking for greenhouse space for their plants during the winter for his organization . Dr. Dossey’s contact information is available if you have space to house the plants for the winter. C. Diamond Award given to Terry and Carol Ash for their exceptional service and dedication to the OOS. They have been exemplary members and deserve this award. Thank you from the members of OOS. E. Rare orchid book donated by family of Mr Scott McDaniels family and suggestions for donation to AOS for centennial celebration or orchid show silent auction in October. Decision to be determined. Claire Garrett with check the AOS library to see if they have this book as well.
    8. Auction of three orchids donated by Bill Parker and Doug Needham. Thank you for your donations.
  9. Program: Dr Mike Friday presented “Native Orchids of Oklahoma”. There are 33 species and 18 genera of orchids in Oklahoma. The highest number of orchids are found in southeast Oklahoma. It was a very informative presentation and information on blooming times and areas will be put on the website. Also a list of nursery selling native species are available from Dr. Mike Friday.
  10. Show & Tell: Claire Garett, Doug Needham, Bill Parker and Keith Warren presented orchids in bloom from their collections.
